Steroid injections are generally safe and well tolerated, however risks include pain, infection, haematoma (bruising or collection of blood under the skin), pigmentary change (lightening or darkening of the skin which rarely can be permanent), atrophy (dipped scar which may be permanent) or loss of subcutaneous fat in the treated area causing a noticeable depression.
