To use ketoconazole (e.g. brand name Nizoral) shampoo on your scalp for dandruff or seborrhoiec dermatitis start by wetting your hair thoroughly. Apply a small amount of ketoconazole shampoo to your scalp and hair and massage the shampoo gently into your scalp with your fingertips. Leave the shampoo on your scalp for about 3 to 5 minutes to allow the medication to fully penetrate. After waiting, rinse your hair and scalp thoroughly with water to remove all traces of the shampoo.

To use ketoconazole shampoo on the face or body for treating conditions caused by yeast infections such as pityriasis versicolor or seborrhoeic dermatitis start by wetting the skin in the shower. Apply a small amount of ketoconazole shampoo, enough to cover the area with a thin layer. Massage the shampoo gently into the skin. Leave the shampoo on the skin for 3 to 5 minutes then rinse the areas thoroughly. I advise patients to apply ketoconazole shampoo 2-3 times per week.

If you have not used the shampoo previously you should test on a small area of the body first to ensure it does not cause irritation or allergy.
