Soolantra is a topical (cream) treatment for inflammatory rosacea and is generally well tolerated. It contains ivermectin, an anti-parasitic agent. It is primarily used to treat inflammatory lesions of rosacea, a chronic skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels on the face. Ivermectin works by reducing the number of Demodex mites on the skin and has anti-inflammatory properties that help alleviate the symptoms associated with rosacea.
How to Use Soolantra
- Before applying Soolantra, cleanse the affected area gently with a mild soap or cleanser and pat it dry. Make sure your hands are also clean before applying the cream.
- Apply a pea-sized amount of Soolantra to each of the five areas of the face: forehead, chin, nose, and each cheek. Spread the cream evenly as a thin layer over the entire face, avoiding the eyes, lips, and mucous membranes.
- Soolantra is applied once daily - it doesn't matter what time but usually is more convenient to use in the evening.
- Wash your hands immediately after applying the cream to remove any residual medication.
- Use Soolantra consistently to achieve the best results, usually over several weeks. Improvement may be seen within 2 to 4 weeks, but it may take up to 3 months to see significant effects.
- If soolantra is effective you can safely continue to use it indefinitely.
Risks and Side Effects
Soolantra is generally well tolerated. Risks include a temporary worsening of rosacea, skin burning, irritation or itching, redness or facial swelling. Very rare risks include serious allergic reaction or liver inflammation. As for any medication it is essential to read the information leaflet that comes within the packaging and contains a full list of all recognised side effects. You should not use this medication if you are pregnant or at risk of becoming pregnant or if you have allergies to ivermectin or any of the ingredients listed in the product information leaflet.
