Rosacea in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Managing rosacea during pregnancy and breastfeeding requires careful consideration, as many standard treatments are not recommended during this time. Hormonal changes can also cause rosacea to flare.
Safe vs unsafe topicals and tablets
- Safe: Azelaic acid is generally considered the safest and most effective topical treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Gentle skincare, diligent sun protection with mineral sunscreen, and topical metronidazole are also usually permitted.
- Unsafe/Avoid: Oral antibiotics like doxycycline and other tetracyclines must be avoided during pregnancy. Most retinoids (topical and oral) are strictly contraindicated. Other topicals like ivermectin or brimonidine are avoided due to a lack of safety data.
Can laser be done for rosacea during pregnancy?
I advise against elective cosmetic procedures like laser or IPL during pregnancy.
