Preparing for a Dermatology Appointment
A dermatology appointment is a valuable opportunity to get an expert diagnosis and treatment plan for your rosacea. Being well-prepared will help you make the most of your time during the consultation and ensure you leave with a clear understanding of your condition.
What photos, history and questions to bring
- Photos: Bring well-lit photos on your phone showing your skin at its worst. Flares are unpredictable, and your skin may be calm on the day of the appointment, so photos provide crucial evidence.
- History: Make a list of all previous treatments you've tried (topical and oral), including what worked, what didn't, and any side effects. Also, list your current skincare products.
- Questions: Write down key questions in advance. For example, "What is my rosacea subtype?", "What are the best treatment options for my specific symptoms?", "What is the long-term plan?".
- Treatement options: Research treatment options online so that you have heard of the different options prior to the consultation and can ask informed questions about the pros and cons of each option.
How to explain symptoms clearly
Be specific. Instead of just saying "my skin is red," describe the symptoms in detail. For example: "I experience intense, burning flushes that last for 30 minutes after I drink hot coffee," or "I have persistent redness on my cheeks and nose, with small pus-filled spots that come and go." This level of detail helps the dermatologist make an accurate diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan effectively.
