IPL vs VBeam (PDL) for Redness and Veins
For the persistent redness and visible broken capillaries that can be caused by rosacea, light and laser therapies are the most effective treatments available. Two commonly used treatments are pulsed dye laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).
Which is best for diffuse redness vs vessels?
- Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL/VBeam): This is considered the most effective treatment, especially for distinct, visible vessels and intense, persistent redness. It uses a singlewavelength of light (595 nm) that is very specifically absorbed by haemoglobin in blood vessels.
- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): IPL uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths, which are filtered to target redness. It can be very effective for treating generalised, diffuse background redness, and can also improve skin pigmentation.
Pulsed dye laser is more effective overall and is much safer for those with pigmented skin types. IPL can be less expensive and can help with other skin issues such as pigmentation at the same time.
Differences in mechanisms and results
PDL works by selectively heating and destroying the targeted blood vessels, which are then absorbed by the body. IPL works similarly but delivers a wider range of light energy. Both require a course of treatments and can produce excellent, long-lasting results. VBeam has a higher risk of bruising especially at higher settings, while IPL typically results in temporary redness and swelling.
