Wrinkle treatments

Botulinum toxin injections work by temporarily reducing movement of the muscles. There are several different brands (e.g. Botox, Bocouture, Azzalure) which have similar effects. Botulinum toxin injections can help to smooth out wrinkles and prevent the development of new ones. Botulinum toxin is used in areas such as the forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet around the eyes. The treatment is minimally invasive and typically involves a series of injections that take only a few minutes to complete. The effects of Botulinum toxin usually last for several months before the treatment needs to be repeated. Botulinum toxin injections can also be used in the lower face to relax the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, such as those around the mouth and chin.

What is Botulinum toxin and how does it work?

Botulinum toxin is a synthetically-produced substance that mimics the action of a natural toxin that reduces muscle movement. It is used cosmetically to reduce wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles. It works by blocking the nerve signals to the muscles near to the sites of injection, preventing them from contracting, which helps smooth out wrinkles.

Is Botulinum toxin safe?

Botulinum toxin is very safe when administered by an experienced clinician. It has been approved by the FDA in the United States for cosmetic uses since 2002. For the vast majority of patients it is a safe and effective treatment.

Common areas for Botulinum toxin injections include the forehead, around the eyes (crow's feet), between the eyebrows (frown lines), and around the mouth.

How long does a Botulinum toxin treatment take?

A Botulinum toxin session typically takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.

What can I expect during a Botulinum toxin procedure?

During the procedure, a small amount of Botulinum toxin is injected into the targeted muscles using a fine needle. The injections are usually not very painful, with most patients experiencing only minor discomfort. If you prefer, a local anaesthetic numbing cream can be applied before the injections.

Treatments for sweating

Botulinum toxin injections (for example Botox) are also commonly used to reduce sweating in the axilla (underarm area), scalp and occasionally palms. Botulinum toxin injections for sweating will take up to two weeks to take full effect and can last up to 6 months.

Botulinum toxin is most commonly used to treat the underarms, but it can also be effective for the scalp. Treatment of the palms is effective but can be very uncomfortable due to the number of injections required and carries a risk of causing weakness of the hand muscles.

In my experience, Botulinum toxin injections are a very effective treatment for axilla (underarm) sweating with a high rate of patient satisfaction. Treatment of other areas is also effective but can be more variable.

How long do the effects of Botulinum toxin last for hyperhidrosis?

The effects of Botulinum toxin injections for hyperhidrosis can last up to 6 months after which a repeat treatment is needed..

What does the procedure involve?

The procedure involves multiple small injections of Botulinum toxin directly into the skin of the affected area - for example 20-25 small injections may be needed for each axilla (underam area). A numbing cream can be used, however for most patients this is necessary for the underarm area.

Are there any side effects associated with Botulinum toxin for sweating?

Side effects are generally mild and temporary. They may include localized pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. In rare cases, there may be temporary muscle weakness in the treated area.
