Electrocautery

For electrocautery a fine tip is used to deliver an electric current to remove benign skin lesions. This will generally heal well. Risks include bleeding, infection, pain, unsightly scar which may be keloid, raised, dipped or different in texture or colour (lighter, darker or redder compared to the adjacent skin) and recurrence of the lesion. If you are having treatment to a larger number of lesions you may decide to trial the treatment to one or two of the lesions first to see how things heal before treating a larger number on a separate visit. Depending upon the area being treated it can be helpful to apply a topical anaesthetic cream (EMLA) at least one hour prior to the procedure to reduce the need for local anaesthetic injections. You will be asked to sign a consent form when you attend for the procedure. Please read this in advance:

I am a London-based Consultant Dermatologist and Dermatological Surgeon. I am highly experienced in skin cancer diagnosis, Mohs micrographic surgery, acne, rosacea, acne scarring and laser treatments. I studied at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, and completed my dermatology training and Mohs fellowship at the prestigious St John's Institute of Dermatology. I graduated from medical school in 2003 and have worked exclusively in Dermatology since 2012.

I lead a research team at King's College London investigating the molecular biology of skin cancer. In recent years I have been involved in Media Appearances, including the Channel 5 series 'Skin A&E', where I perform skin surgeries and treat various skin conditions.
