This is an inflamed lesion representing an immune reaction to a pre-existing solar lentigo or SK, and is often flatter and more violaceous.
While an irritated SK can become dark and inflamed, melanoma is suggested by more significant asymmetry, border irregularity, and rapid growth, and is confirmed by biopsy.
