Erythrasma

This bacterial infection can be distinguished from the other pigmentary changes by its characteristic coral-red fluorescence under a Wood's lamp.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Unlike the others, this condition is directly preceded by a history of inflammation or injury to the skin and lacks a velvety texture.

Racial pigmentation

This is a normal, stable, and symmetrical variant of pigmentation, lacking the velvety texture of acanthosis nigricans or the infectious nature of erythrasma.
